Doctor of Ministry - Admission Procedures

Below is a synopsis of the items needed for your application.  In the case of discrepancies, use the information on this webpage, as it is updated faster than the application materials.

The following items are needed for your application:

1. Transcripts from undergraduate and graduate schools.

2. Biographical Essay (no more than 3 pages) focusing on:

a. What brought you into ministry?

b. What is your ministry like now?

c. What do you hope for your ministry?

3. Statement of Purpose (no more than 5 pages) focusing on:

a. Why you are applying for a specific track:

1) Why does it interest you personally?

2) How will it enhance your personal practice of ministry?

3) How will it enhance the practice of ministry within your ministry site?

4) How will your site help set an example for the overall mission and ministry of the church?

b. What specific research interests you have that you hope to pursue in this track?

c. What learning objectives do you have, i.e., what specific lessons do you hope to learn and specific skills do you hope to master?

d. Why do you specifically want to pursue this degree at Garrett-Evangelical?

5. A sample of writing – any paper, article, sermon or other writing that the applicant believes is indicative of the applicant's best writing.

6. Three letters of reference:

a. From someone familiar with the applicant's academic abilities, specifically focusing on the applicant's ability to focus on academic work and the applicant's ability to listen to and communice ideas. Examples of who this letter coucome from are:

1) a faculty member from seminary or other institution of higher learning

2) a qualified layperson in the applicant's ministry site

3) a colleague in the ministry who is in a study group with the applicant.

b. From someone who is in supervision over the applicant. This could be a judicatory official, bishop, district superintendent, senior pastor, or other ministry supervisor. This letter should at least answer the following quesions:

1) Are there any boundary violations or misconduct known to the church by the applicant?

2) How would the applicant's ministry benefit from an enhanced competency in ministry through earning a DMin?

3) How might the judicatory/ministry setting in which the applicant serves seek to deploy the appicant to capitalize on the applicant's new compentency after the applicant receives a DMin?

8. Official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores are required of all international applicants who have not completed a degree in the United States. The institutional code for reporting your scores to Garrett-Evangelical is 1245.

9. A $75 application fee must be received before a DMin application will be complete. If admitted to the program, a non- refundable confirmation of deposit of $200 applied to your account for the first term of study and a $55 Northwestern University NetID connection fee are required within one month of notification of admission. If a notification of deferral is not received by the date of confirmed enrollment, the deposit is forfeited. If the application expires (applications are maintained for one year from the date of intended enrollment) a request for updating the application requires a new application fee.
