Upon the recommendation of the Promotion Review Committee, the Board of Trustees of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary affirmed the promotion Dr. Jaeyeon Lucy Chung to associate professor of pastoral theology and care at their meeting on May 12, 2022. Chung also serves as the director of the Styberg Library and has been a member of the faculty since 2013.

In their report to the academic dean and president, members of the Promotion Review Committee noted, “Dr. Chung is a unique and remarkable member of the faculty at Garrett-Evangelical, serving in the dual roles of assistant professor of pastoral theology and director of the Styberg Library. By her own accounting, in fulfilling these two roles she has developed a tri-vocational identity as a teacher, pastoral theologian, and library leader. Rather than segmenting out her work as a teacher in the pastoral care and counseling field, her scholarly work as a pastoral theologian, and her administrative work as the director of the library, Dr. Chung has found a way to integrate all three, allowing each to inform the others.”

I am honored and delighted to be promoted to associate professor of pastoral theology and care,” said Chung. “It is a great privilege and blessing to have served this beloved community in multiple roles for the past 10 years. I want to thank my wonderful students, esteemed faculty colleagues, and amazing library staff for having been an important source of inspiration for me to expand my boundaries and pursue excellence with integrity. In this challenging but also promising era, I look forward to continuing to work on the advancement of theological education in my tri-vocational roles as teacher, pastoral theologian, and library leader.”

Chung earned her doctor of philosophy in religion degree, with a focus in person, community, and religious practices, from Emory University in 2008. In addition, she holds a master of library and information science degree from Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois, a master of sacred theology degree from Boston University, and a master of arts in religion from Ewha Womans University in Seoul, Korea.

Chung has published numerous book chapters, articles, and book reviews. She is the author of Korean Women, Self Esteem and Practical Theology: Transformative Care (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2017). A book chapter titled, “Just Aging: Practicing Pastoral Care with Older Adults” in the book Injustice and the Care of Souls is forthcoming (Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 2023).

Most recently, Chung received a grant from the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion to fund her pedagogical project titled, “Spiritual Care Lab as an Experiential and Engaged Learning Model.” After completing the 2020-2021 Wabash Teaching and Learning Workshop for Early Career Theological School Faculty in July, Chung was one of 14 faculty invited to submit a proposal. The grant has supported Chung’s project from September 2021 through May 2022.
