Hispanic-Latinx Fellows Program

Forming the next generation of Hispanic-Latinx religious leaders

 

Garrett is committed to bringing Hispanic and Latinx culture and experiences into the life of the seminary and providing continuing education to churches and communities. In line with this commitment, Garrett’s Hispanic-Latinx Fellows Program supports Hispanic-Latinx students who are called to ministry.

 

This Fellows Program recognizes the unique gifts of our Hispanic and Latinx applicants who will be ministering in bilingual settings and/or who have significant contributions to make to the global religious landscape. Priority is given to United Methodist bi-lingual and/or first and second generation Hispanic and Latinx students.

 

Hispanic-Latinx Fellows Program Components

 

As a Hispanic-Latinx Fellow, you are guaranteed the following:

 

  • A scholarship ranging from 50-100% of tuition;
  • Gatherings with the Hispanic-Latinx Fellows and faculty advisor, Dr. Débora Junker, for fellowship, mentoring, and conversation around various topics related to theological education and professional ministry formation;
  • Opportunities to work with and help shape the activities of the Hispanic-Latinx Center; and
  • Networking with Hispanic-Latinx Garrett alums.

Meet Our Hispanic-Latinx Faculty

Through my interdisciplinary approach to education, my areas of interest range from Paulo Freire’s work, critical pedagogy, global citizenship, intercultural and postcolonial studies, cultural-historical theory activity (Lev Vygotsky), and liberation theologies.

 

Dr. Débora Junker
Associate Professor of Critical Pedagogies

In my teaching, I seek to inform and train future religious leaders in the practices of ‘true generosity’ so that the Church is an engine of transformation and liberation in the world, rather than a perpetuator of ‘false charity.’

As a teacher, I try to help my students become aware of the stake they have in the questions raised by theology and the responsibility they have to develop their own theology as best they can.

Hispanic-Latinx Center

The Hispanic-Latinx Center’s mission is to meet the needs of Hispanic-Latinx students, pastors, parishioners, and community leaders in creative, insightful, useful, and organic ways. It also seeks to cultivate a community of friends who have a heart and concern about the realities of Latinx communities across the United States, Latin America, and beyond.
