Discovering and Rediscovering Our Identity
Liberation theologian Rubem Alves has spoken of the power of stories to evoke a hidden nostalgia sleeping within us. My abiding fascination with the potency of "story" is the common thread in my research and teaching in the Old Testament. In the texts of ancient Israel one encounters a world where identity is formed, re-formed, remembered, and cherished through the telling of stories. Teaching these texts in the seminary classroom is an exciting and rejuvenating experience for me. We continue the dynamic process of telling and retelling-of discovering and rediscovering our identity, in all its richness and complexity.
